Sojourn Bicycling Vacations Announces New Taste of Vermont Bike Tour for Summer 2014

Sojourn Bicycling Vacations showcases Vermont's finest artisanal producers with their new Taste of Vermont Bike Tour. This deluxe summer trip blends visits to a selection of the State's finest cheese makers, craft breweries, and organic farms with exceptional bicycling routes through Vermont's picturesque countryside.

The trip is designed for strong intermediate and avid cyclists, and will run during the months of July and August, 2014. Long at the forefront of the fresh local foods movement and high on the list of top cycling destinations, Vermont is the perfect location for such a trip.

The six-day Taste of Vermont Tour includes 300 miles of some of the state's finest cycling routes. Avid cyclists can challenge themselves on a climb through Middlebury Gap as well as a classic loop through Smuggler's Notch, so named for a Canadian bootlegging passageway during Prohibition. The trip also includes miles of rolling terrain as it loops through farmland across Vermont.

Along the routes, cyclists will visit with the entrepreneurial minded Vermonters behind the successful specialty products for which the state is known. Visit with respected craft producers like those of Hill Farmstead Brewing, Jasper Hill cheese, and the patriarch of an eighth generation sugaring operation that is still using traditional taps for their maple trees.

Specialty dinners are included at the Swift House Inn in Middlebury, the Inn at Mountain View Farm in East Burke, and Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. Each property conveys a true taste of Vermont -- picturesque settings, history, and cuisine featuring fresh local products. The trip kicks off with one of Vermont's foremost wine makers pairing his wines with a specially prepared dinner.

Adventure Channel: Naturalist Journeys' Jamaica Birding & Nature Tour, February 22-28, 2014

Naturalist Journeys is offering a guided group birding tour on Jamaica, February 22-28, 2014. Birdwatchers will experience a very different Jamaica than those who visit the island for a beach stay. Jamaica offers nature enthusiasts a rich mountainous landscape with habitats differing across ascending elevations. Quiet roads and forest trails allow access for birders to catalog the twenty-five plus species found nowhere else in the world. As part of the British Commonwealth, Jamaica has a long tradition of birdwatching. The Jamaican Bird Club, known as BirdLife Jamaica, has existed since the 1950’s. This not-for-profit membership organization started as the Grosse Bird Club. It publishes the journal “The Broadsheet” and keeps records of unusual sightings.

Of all the islands of the Caribbean, Jamaica and Cuba claim the highest number of endemic bird species. Each has a tody, an emerald green feathered-gem not much larger than a hummingbird. Only five tody species exist in the world, all found in the Caribbean. A visit to Jamaica rivals the intrigue birders find in going to the Galapagos. Naturalist Journeys owner Peg Abbott developed the tour, along with others to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago to showcase the region’s biological legacy. She says, “Few people, even devoted birdwatchers, realize that Caribbean bird biodiversity exceeds that of the Galapagos Islands, showing patterns of adaptive radiation across numerous species, with endemism occurring all the way to the family level with the todies and the Palmchat of the Dominican Republic.”

About the Jamaica Nature and Birding Tour
The tour begins and ends in Kingston, Jamaica, and participants have the option to come in early to see highlights of the city, including extensive tropical plant collections at the Hope Botanical Garden. The tour is limited to 12 participants. For more information and itinerary, visit Naturalist Journeys' website.

Casas del XVI, New Luxury Boutique Hotel Opening in 2014 in the New World's Oldest City

Photo courtesy of Casas del XVI

Imagine stepping back in time to the sixteenth century, tracing the same cobblestone streets as Christopher Columbus, relishing the grandeur of the new world's first church and retreating to a stunning colonial mansion. For travelers to the Dominican Republic, this dream will soon be a reality at the brand new, boutique Casas del XVI, an eight-room luxury hotel opening in Santo Domingo's emerging Ciudad Colonial in March 2014, with a soft opening slated for December 15, 2013.

Nestled in the heart of the New World's oldest city, Casas del XVI is the first hotel in the Dominican Republic comprised of an exclusive collection of newly renovated colonial houses dating back to the sixteenth century. Maintaining the integrity of the stunning, romantic architecture, the hotel preserves the beauty of the abodes that make up the old town neighborhood, offering guests accommodations in eight rooms and suites spread between three individual houses each reminiscent of the island's earliest European settlers.

Vermont Tourism Announces New "Seeing is BeLeafing" Video Foliage Reports Starting September 5, 2013

The stage is set for a beautiful foliage season as early fall colors begin to emerge in Vermont. The Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing welcomes viewers on a tour of dozens of scenic sites - scouting out the best and brightest leaf-peeping locales – meeting foresters, artists, farmers, general store clerks and many more Vermont characters along the way.

Video courtesy of Vermont Tourism on YouTube

"Seeing is BeLeafing" Video Foliage Reports start September 5, 2013. Find preliminary foliage info and the first footage of the season at www.VermontVacation.com/fall. In addition to weekly "Seeing is BeLeafing" videos, the webpage will feature weekly recommended driving routes, events, deals, another celebration of the season and Apple to iPods – where visitors to 20 Vermont apple orchards can search for wooden apples hidden for pickers to find – and win an Apple iPod - beginning September 7.

With the highest percentage of maples trees in New England, one-third of which are sugar and red maples (responsible for producing intense red hues,) Vermont has the most vibrant fall foliage in the northeast. The state is 76 percent forested and home to more than 50 state parks. Leaf peepers can view expansive foliage across more than 300,000 acres of state-owned forests complemented by farm valleys, towns and waterways. In the early stages of fall foliage, the best colors can generally be found in higher elevations, the northern sections of the state, and in wetter low-lying areas, where swamp maples bring an early splash of crimson.

Stay up to date on Vermont’s foliage progression with "Seeing is BeLeafing." Sign up to receive a weekly email from September 5 through late-October; follow on Twitter, hashtag #SeeingisBeLeafing or call 1-800-VERMONT.

Spruce Point Inn will host photographer David Marx for a three-day Coastal Maine Photography Seminar in September

Spruce Point Inn, the highly rated 57-acre oceanfront resort in Boothbay Harbor, Maine helps guests customize their “oceanside memories made in Maine” with packages built around specific vacation experiences. This September, photographers (both casual and professional) have the opportunity to work with award-winning photographer David Marx on a three-day Coastal Maine Photography Seminar, exploring the iconic built and natural landscape of the Maine Mid-coast.

Each day, the photographer will lead a small group on the Inn’s motorlaunch Bright Line to a different location: Squirrel Island, Ram Island, Damariscove, Burnt Island and its lighthouse, the docks of Boothbay Harbor with their yachts and lobster boats and Spruce Point itself. (For the itinerary and an interactive map, click here.) Along the way David Marx will discuss contemporary photography techniques and critique the seminar participants’ work.

Presented September 18-21, 2013, the Coastal Maine Photography Seminar Package includes three nights accommodations, all meals, seminar fees, daily transportation to the photography sites, use of all the Inn’s amenities including two swimming pools, Har-Tru tennis court, sea kayaks and bicycles. Rates including taxes and gratuities from $1,500 single occupancy ($2,215, double).

David Marx teaches digital photography workshops and founded the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Lab and training classes. He has taught photography at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography since 2002. His moody images of Pemaquid Point and Marshall Point Lighthouses are immediately identifiable. “Oh, Maine. SO beautiful. ‘The way life should be,’” is how David describes working with Maine subjects. Over the years, David has led photography programs for the American Society of Media Photographers, the Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana, FirstLight Photography Workshops, and Blackberry Farm.

“As we help guests create ‘oceanside memories made in Maine’ we like to offer different ways of seeing Spruce Point Inn and our beautiful surroundings here in Boothbay,” said Angelo DiGiulian, innkeeper for Spruce Point Inn. “This photography seminar is one of many experiential packages we have planned to give our guests a special immersion in our destination that leaves them with an even more authentic sense of place. Plus we know that David's entertaining teaching style matches our own hospitality culture and works well for photography students of all skill levels.”

Vermont-based Sojourn Bicycling Vacations Will Debut Three New Weekend Bike Tours in Their Home State This Summer

Sojourn Bicycling Vacations will begin offering weekend bike tours in their home state of Vermont this summer. The three new trips, planned for prime cycling season in Vermont will debut in June and continue through September. Each trip includes three nights of lodging at one of Vermont's top inns as well as three full days of riding the State's finest bike routes.

Best known for their six-day, world-renowned Lake Champlain Valley tour, Sojourn now plans to make this spectacular region of Vermont more accessible to cyclists who find it difficult to get away for a full week's vacation. One of the three new trips will be based on the shore of Lake Champlain at the historic Basin Harbor Club, offering an array of activities such as boating, golf and tennis, as well as serene lodging, and exceptional cuisine. This trip provides easier and intermediate bike route options as well as visits to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and historic sites such as Crown Point and Essex on the opposite shore of Lake Champlain.

Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe will host an intermediate level trip that also offers plenty of activities other than cycling. This sprawling property features an extensive network of walking trails, mountain bike trails, outdoor pool, and spa. Road cyclists will enjoy a classic loop through picture book farmland and a spectacular rural ride to Montpelier, Vermont's State Capital. A reception with Sam von Trapp at Trapp Brewery is also planned.

Sojourn will also offer a trip for avid cyclists who want to test their mettle by tackling the famed gaps in Vermont's Green Mountains. The Waybury Inn, nestled at the base of the mountains in the tiny village of East Middlebury, will serve as the lodging base for the gaps trip. Featuring over 10,000' of climbing over three days, participants will appreciate the hearty fare in the Waybury's restaurant and pub, as well as the selection of local craft beer. A nearby mountain stream will provide a refreshing way to conclude each day's ride - one of which features a full century option.
