The Cahoon Museum of American Art, announces it has received a loan of works from the collection of Kenneth and Sharon Lacasse, of Cape Cod. The collection entails a large selection of bench made Wallace Nutting furniture, Wallace Nutting photographs, iron, books, treenware, and other Wallace Nutting memorabilia.

Wallace Nutting (1861-1941) was a U.S. minister, photographer, artist and antiquarian, primarily known for his hand-colored photographs. He also was an accomplished author, lecturer, furniture maker, antiques expert and collector.

Wallace Nutting sought to bring what he believed to be traditional values and aesthetics into contemporary life, by preserving old buildings, manufacturing new goods in past styles and creating works of art depicting early American scenes. The upcoming exhibition (August 25-October 11, 2015) will showcase what extraordinary works he created during his lifetime, including photographs, furniture and iron work.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE EXHIBITION:

Thursday, August 27, 5:30pm-7:00pm - Opening Reception

Tuesday, September 15, 2:00pm - Gallery Talk by Charles T. Lyle, Executive Director of Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum (Wethersfield CT) who will speak about "Wallace Nutting: Preservation Pioneer"

Tuesday, September 22, 11:00am - Tour of the exhibition by Kenneth and Sharon Lacasse

This exhibition is a collaboration with the Wallace Nutting Collectors Club—a source for collectors, enthusiasts, educators and historians with an interest in photography, colonial furniture, books, ephemera, pastoral images, visual narratives of colonial life and the Colonial Revival Movement.

For further information, visit www.wallacenutting.org or call (508) 428-7581.

The new temporary location of the Cahoon Museum of American Art is located at 30 Bates Rd., Mashpee Commons. Hours are Tuesdays thru Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.

Go with the Wind(jammers) to see Maine's coast

Each summer, thousands of people step aboard a Maine schooner not knowing where the wind will take them for the next two hours or several days. Close-up views of lighthouses and lobstermen at work, and sightings of seals, osprey and bald eagles are standard wherever the windjammer goes.

A day sail or multi-day vacation on a passenger schooner is a unique way to see and learn about the Maine coast. Set off from one of these harbors.

Photo courtesy of Maine Office of Tourism
South Coast - Portland Schooner Company offers two-hour day sails through the islands of Casco Bay and overnight trips on the schooners Bagheera and Wendameen. In Kennebunkport, the Schooner Eleanor sails between Cape Arundel and Cape Porpoise with views of sand beaches and grand oceanfront homes.

Mid-Coast - This region of Maine is home to North America's largest fleet of traditional sailing schooners. Fourteen passenger vessels - many recognized as National Historic Landmarks - based in Camden, Rockland and Rockport offer all-inclusive sailing vacations, with an island lobster bake and shore excursions, lasting up to six days. Two to three-hour day sails are also offered from the three ports, and from Boothbay Harbor.

Down East - Bar Harbor is a destination for day sails on Frenchman Bay aboard the modern, steel hulled schooner Margaret Todd. And in Eastport, the former Chesapeake Bay oyster schooner Ada C. Lore offers the only sail powered whale watching cruise in Maine on Passamaquoddy Bay.

Photogenic Fields of Wildflowers

See landscapes of iconic lupines and other wildflowers in these destinations:
Several fields in the Aroostook County town of Stockholm burst with white, pink and purple wild lupines and daisies. Follow roads off Route 161.

The island of Deer Isle has a festival to celebrate its lupine landscapes and other wildflowers that can be viewed along and off of Route 15.

The 21-mile Grafton Notch Scenic Byway welcomes travelers with fields of wild daisies, lupines and fireweed. The byway traverses Route 26 from Newry to Upton.

Lark Hotels to Unveil New Boutique Hotel In Newport, Rhode Island

This May, Lark Hotels will open freshly painted doors to a bygone age with the introduction of Gilded, the newest boutique property in Lark Hotels’ collection of distinctive New England properties.

The hotel, which will boast 13 rooms and 4 suites, is a cheeky and modern twist on the over-the-top era that brought Vanderbilt and Carnegie to this seaside town. Imagine for a moment a fusion between 2015’s amenities and Gilded Age bejeweled decadence and – voila! – meet Gilded: a place for fun, relaxation, and sipping champagne.

Award-winning, Boston-based interior designer Rachel Reider sought inspiration from rococo, beaux arts, and other popular styles of the era while designing the interiors. A modern mix of ornate mirrors, lacquered surfaces, and gold accents come together to create envelope-pushing décor unlike anything found in Newport.

We had a lot of fun capturing the essence of this opulent time period and reimagining it for the modern day traveler,” Reider said. “I love rich jewel tones and luxurious fabrics, and Gilded was tailor made for them.”

Beyond the hotel’s lush design, whimsical takes on leisure activities of the Gilded Age will transport guests to another time. Guests can take advantage of the billiards room, complete with a black velvet and white lacquer pool table, and relax in the secluded courtyard with a croquet practice court.

Lifestyle brand vineyard vines®, the official outfitter for all Lark Hotels, will provide coastal chic attire for Gilded staff. The hotel participates in the “On a Lark Club,” which allows guests to accrue points for each stay that can be redeemed for a future stay, exclusive benefits, packages, and experiences.

Both historic and hip, Newport has long been famous for its proximity to the sea and sailing culture, as well as its old world mansions. While the quaint, quintessential charm of the town endures, Newport has also developed a vibrant restaurant, art, and music scene that allows for fun and mischief at every turn.

“Our property, The Attwater, has been a great success in Newport with it’s unconventional take on nautical style,” said Lark Hotels CEO, Rob Blood. “We look forward to guests seeing another classic side of Newport, the Gilded Age, depicted in a fresh and clever way with Gilded.”

To celebrate its grand opening, Gilded will be offering a Grand Opening Special. Guests who stay 2 nights in the first 20 days of May will receive 20% off their room rate, 2 tickets to a tour of The Breakers (the grandest of the mansions), and a chilled bottle of prosecco upon arrival.

For additional information on Gilded, please visit www.gildedhotel.com or call (401) 619-7758.
